Violent clashes were seen in the national capital on Republic Day as protesting farmers broke through police barricades and stormed parts of New Delhi. The police resoted to tear gas, lathi charge. A protester died on the way, the police said it was an accident. Over 80 police personnel were injured. Farmer union leaders have distanced themselves from the violence as many tractor-protestors pulled back to the border. What happens next to the protests? Union Home minister Amit Shah held a high-level meeting where a decision was taken to deploy additional paramilitary forces in Delhi. Haryana and Punjab are now on alert. In other news, the big question is if the existing Covid vaccines be tweaked to handle the deadlier variants of the virus. Moderna will examine a third dose against the mutant strain.
