At Chief Justice Farewell, A Note From His Successor On "True Patriotism"

Senior Supreme Court judge Ranjan Gogoi praised outgoing Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra at his farewell ceremony today, saying that he would continue in the stead of a judge who had taken several challenging cases ranging from "mob lynching to honour killing". Launching his speech with a quote by Jonathan Swift -- "Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others -- Justice Gogoi said. "Justice Misra has continuously upheld the freedom of the individual, freedom to choose... He has supported women's rights. His words have inspired people."

Activist Gautam Navlakha Freed From House Arrest By Delhi High Court

Gautam Navlakha, one of the five rights activists arrested in connection with the Koregaon-Bhima violence case, has been freed from house arrest. The Delhi High Court granted him relief, saying the Supreme Court last week had given him the liberty to approach an appropriate forum within four weeks to seek legal help, which he has taken.

Contaminated Polio Vaccine Given To Children In UP, Probe Ordered

After traces of polio virus type 2 were found in some batches of oral polio vaccine manufactured by a Ghaziabad-based pharmaceutical company, the health ministry has asked the polio surveillance team in Uttar Pradesh to trace all children who were given the vaccine. As the vaccine was administered as part of the government's universal immunisation programme, the ministry has also ordered immediate withdrawal of the particular manufacturer's vaccine.

Durga Puja in West Bengal begins on 16 October. On the 17th, one puja pandal in Kolkata will have a VIP visitor -- Congress president Rahul Gandhi. He will do what all Bengalis do on that day -- offer "Anjali" or floral tributes to the Goddess Durga. Anjali on Ashtami or the second and main day of Durga Puja is believed to be the most propitious. While the Congress is yet to announce the visit, its new Bengal chief Somen Mitra has confirmed it. 2 Jets Were Scrambled As Pak Chopper Violated Airspace: Air Force Sources

After a Pakistani helicopter entered Indian airspace at Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch on Sunday, Air Force sources have confirmed that two Indian fighters, most likely MiG-21s, were launched from Srinagar airbase to intercept the aircraft. The Pakistani helicopter managed to fly back to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir or PoK moments after it was targeted by the army with small arms fire. No large-calibre anti-aircraft weapon was used.

Man Shot Dead Allegedly By Drug Mafia In Delhi, Murder On CCTV

A 34-year-old man was shot dead by two unidentified assailants in southeast Delhi's Taimoor Nagar on Sunday, the police said. The police are analysing the CCTV camera footage of the incident which took place in a busy area.
